Volunteer at The Listening Place

The Pimlico Million are proud to have funded The Listening Place – Volunteers Programme. We’ve asked the Listening Place to provide us with some more information about how you can take part in their volunteering programme, read on below.

The Listening Place provides face to face support, in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment, for those who feel life is no longer worth living. The world can feel like a very lonely place if you are suicidal: not only is it difficult to share those feelings but it can be hard to get the care and support that will make a difference. The Listening Place offers a warm and welcoming environment nearby in Pimlico; somewhere that individuals can talk openly about their feelings without being judged or being given advice.

Importantly, we provide on-going support from trained non-judgemental volunteers, which can continue over a number of weeks if this is appropriate.

We have now been in operation for three years and have already been referred more than 2,500 suicidal visitors. We get referrals daily from a number of Charitable organisations and the NHS; however, because we refuse to share confidential information, we do not receive official funding and rely solely on the kind generosity of donors and time from our Volunteers.

We give full training beforehand and continued support and training for our volunteers, to ensure the best service for our visitors… All we ask of you is for a firm commitment of just four hours once a fortnight, on an agreed day and time. We are located just a two-minutes walk from Pimlico underground station and a seconds from the Vauxhall Bridge Road.

The most difficult part of volunteering can be taking the first step – but once you have started, you will probably continue volunteering at different times throughout your life.

If you would like to find out more about our lovely team of volunteers and would like to come to an information meeting, please fill out the application form on our website http://listeningplace.org.uk/volunteer/ or call 020 3906 7676.
